Suanplu Boulevard       Thai                                 Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Road

Tel: 676-1653, 286-5856

The name gives you a hint that the location's a breeze. Set in an airy compound off newly cut road, it's a cheap and trendy hang-out for those hours after long tiring work - a modern bohemian rendezvour decorated with second-hand tables and left-over chair. The area in front of the restaurant is a small garden full of leafy plants ,and diners have the choice of sitting either outdoors, at tables set amongst the foliage or inside in a very clean and tastefully decorated ,air-conditioned room. Prices are in the lower mid-range for local food.

Sweet Basil                   Vietnamese                         Suhumvit 62

Tel: 02/176-5490

It is worth making the long trek down Sukhumvit to Soi 62 (Ekimae) for the splendidly presented Vietnamese fare, in a fresh setting of crisp white tablecloths, glistening silver and glassware, and ferns and flowers. The cooking is professional—try the bo la lat (brochettes of beef wrapped in a pungent leaf) and the ban cuon tom (dumplings stuffed with shrimp and mushrooms), or the more usual but delicious salads and crunchy cha gio (spring rolls with a sweet, tangy sauce). This is a smart restaurant where you find Thais dressing up for a special meal.

The Front Page       European                           Rama 4 road

Tel : 02/234-8134

This cozy British-style pub and restaurant is a convenient social spot if you are at the upper end of Silom or Sathorn roads. We attracts local expats and Thais for its convivial atmosphere. You sit either at the bar or at tables, and the food is mostly Western, from hamburgers to steak, but there are simple Thai dishes as well. On weekends, a trio plays jazz until shortly after midnight. .

Yok Yor                Thai                                  Wisutikasat road

Tel: 02/281-1829 or 02/282-7385

At dinner recently aboard a grounded vessel on the Chao Phraya, reached by  a gangplank, we saw not a single Westerner, and little English was spoken.   The well-cooked Thai food was served with dispatch, and the cool darkness of the river lent a romantic aura to the exotic scene.

There's live music from 6 PM on, and Japanese, Chinese, and some European dishes are also served.  The management also runs a dinner/music cruise along the Chao Phraya  every night (8:30-10:30; B70 plus cost of food), aboard a 400-seat boat

Sara-Jane's           Esan food                  Sindhorn Tower 1, Wireless Rd.                                       Phone: 02/650-9992

Sara-Jane's open dining room has sparse decor. It is designed to accommodate lots of people for lunch, though many also stop off for dinner. The menu celebrates I-san food, with many types of salad served with larb—a mince made from pork, chicken, tuna, or other meat and fish. One favorite is yam pla dook foo, a crisp, olden, fried fish with a mango topping. For those who want European fare, Sara-Jane also offers Italian food, with a good representation of pasta dishes.

Royal Kitchen                Chinese                             N. Sathorn

Tel: 02/234-3063

Perhaps the most elegant of Bangkok's many Chinese restaurants, the Royal Kitchen consists of a number of small, atmospherically decorated dining rooms where everything, right down to the silver chopsticks, has been carefully considered. The menu is a reference resource for southern Chinese delicacies, including such offerings as mieng nok, with finely minced, seasoned pigeon served on individual fragrant leaves. At lunchtime, dim sum is served, and it, too, is probably Bangkok's best, as beautiful to look at as it is subtle in taste. Jacket and tie.

The Regent Grill         French                      Rajadamri Rd

Tel: 02/251-6127

This is a strikingly designed, high-fashion French restaurant. On the menu from time to time appear such memorable dishes as fresh goose liver in   raspberry vinegar (which can be specially ordered a day or so in advance).  Excellent endive salads and lobster dishes, one with a subtle goose-liver sauce,  are regularly featured. Formerly Le Cristal, the restaurant has been enlarged to encompass a terrace overlooking the imaginatively landscaped grounds of  the Regent of Bangkok Hotel, and it is now putting more emphasis on grilled   dishes. Jacket and tie.
