In this chapter, we will explore approaches to monitoring and managing bandwidth resources at the application level in the Java environment. We will not delve into the ins and outs of real-time network protocols, nor will we touch on the use of native code modules in bandwidth-limited systems (e.g., native data decoders to improve CPU utilization). We will also avoid going into detail on data compression schemes and their trade-offs, other than to reinforce the notion that trade-offs do exist, and to point out where compression schemes play a role in the design of a bandwidth-limited system.
